The Tory party has finally succeeded in its inherent ambition of dismantling Labour’s great State health project – the National Health Service (NHS).
Its taken nearly sixty years to achieve and was demolished in a single night by the Conservative Party (who will probably say it was consensual with the Liberals), as the final reading of the Health and Social Care Bill was passed in the House of Commons, which means it now passes to the Lords to ratify into law.
The CONDEM Government had feared a rebellion from Liberal Democrat MPs but instead won with a healthy majority of 65. A total of 316 MPs voted for the Government’s position on health reform, with 251 against mostly from the Labour benches.
Labour have stated they will still attempt to wreck and stop the Bill in the House of Lords.
They Labour Party could have allies in more senior and sensible Liberal Democrats, once the dust has settled and the impact of the reforms that no-one wants, is discussed. Baroness Williams has already signalled her concerns.
After a second day of debate, Tory Health Secretary Andrew Lansley told the House of Commons his “only motivation” was safeguarding the NHS.
Health Insurance Blog thinks his only motivation is that of political ideological idiocy shared by right wing Tory zealots with radical ideas, that they can sneak through using bully boy whips, and blame on the Liberals at the next election!
The Labour benches, said they feared the changes would see the NHS “destroyed”.
Shadow health secretary John Healey called the reforms the wrong policy, based on the “wrong ideology”.
He warned the Bill would see power to direct the health service transferred from the Secretary of State to hundreds of devolved bodies. The change “betrays the founding principles” of the health service, he said.
Mr Lansley’s flagship plans involve handing a commissioning budget worth £60 billion to groups of local GPs.
It will also see Primary Care Trusts scrapped, administration costs reduced and a bigger role for private sector providers and private health insurance as a primary funding vehicle.
